Cat Stevens lahir di London, Inggris 21 Juli 1948 dengan nama lahir Steven Demetre Georgiou. Pada awal karirnya dia memakai nama Cat Stevens.
Dia berhasil menjual 40 juta album selama sepuluh tahun antara tahun 1960-1970. Lagu-lagunya yang populer antara lain Morning has broken, Wild World, Father and Son dan Oh Very Young.
Cat Stevens menjadi muallaf dan memeluk agama Islam pada tahun 1978 setelah mengalami pengalaman hampir mati (near death expirience) dan berganti nama menjadi Yusuf Islam dan dia pun menjadi seorang pendakwah yang vokal.
